Pure Tone Audiometry
The first quantitative hearing test done to check the degree of hearing loss in children and adults is called Pure Tone Audiometry. The test in turn consists of Audiometry Brainstem Response, Otoacoustic Emissions, Pure-Tone Testing, Speech Testing and tests of middle ear. This is one of the inexpensive ways of hearing test. The results can give you details about whether your hearing loss is unilateral or bilateral, the frequencies that are affected and the type of hearing loss.
Impedence Audiometry
The Impedance Audiometry is used to check the middle ear. And it is one of the accurate method to check the inner ear. It is an objective method based on the stapedius reflexes, tension of the tympanic membrane and the pressure in the middle ear. The test can diagnosis following things like facial palsy, otosclerosis, hypertrophy of adenoids or tonsils, presence of infectious fluids in the middle ear and otitis media with effusion.
Auditory Brain Stem Response
Auditory Brain Stem Response(ABR) is used to check the cochlea and the brain path. This test is used for the one who cannot complete typical hearing screening. And also to the patient having symptoms in brain or in the brain pathway. The electrodes are connected to the skin and connected to the computer. The signal are then analyzed for defects. All you have to do is simply rest or sleep in the session.
Oto Acoustic Emission
This test is used to measure how well your inner ear works that is your cochlea. When you give a sound your cochlea respond by emitting a sound too. The test is used to measure the sound response. If you have normal hearing sense then you will produce this sound. If your hearing loss is higher than 25 to 30db your cochlea won’t produce these soft sounds. And this tests can also show the blockage in the inner and outer ear.
Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential(VEMP):
VEMP is an emerging tool for identifying vestibular lesions. This is useful in documenting abnormally low threshold in persons with Tullio effect. This is mostly occurs with patients having fistulae and superior canal dehiscence syndrome (SCD). This test results in improved test outcomes for diagnosis. VEMP is a noninvasive safe test. It cause no discomfort to the patients. VEMP is recorded using a computer, sound generator and surface electrodes. In turn send the signal to the computer for testing.
Electrocochleography:
This test is used to measure the electrical potentials generated at the inner ear. The test diagnosis if the inner ear has too much fluid pressure in it. Because the fluid pressure can cause tinnitus, aural fullness and hearing loss. This test takes up to 40 minutes to complete. The patient has to listen to the ticking sound while the doctors measure the response through the earphone attached to the inner canal and the electrodes attached to the head skin.
Tinnitus Retraining Therapy
It is a process of learning to cope up with the inner ringing sounds both in conscious and subconscious levels. You can feel the therapy as a rain drop falling on the roof and later completely gone from mind. The theory has major 3 steps. They are collecting patients history. Then wearing the device around the ear and producing a sound to divert the wearer attention from tinnitus. It teaches the patient to ignore tinnitus noise through stress management and relaxation exercise.
